How to acclimatize in Cusco: a guide to reaching 5,200 m without a hard time
Cusco sits at 3,399 m. Vinicunca reaches 5,200 m. Whether you enjoy the trip or ruin it depends on understanding altitude. Here is what a Cusco guide recommends for your first 48 hours.
When travelers arrive in Cusco, the first thing they feel is not the altitude itself: it is a body that is not used to working with less oxygen. At 3,399 meters, the air holds roughly 33% less oxygen than at sea level. The body adapts, but it needs time.
At Altura Top Travel we design every itinerary around one simple rule: never climb more than 500 meters a day after arriving in Cusco, and always spend at least 48 hours in the city before tours such as Vinicunca or Humantay.
The first 24 hours
Rest. Plenty of water. Light meals. Coca tea as often as you like (every hotel in Cusco serves it). No alcohol and no strenuous activity.
Day 2
A city tour: a short walk around Qoricancha, some rest, a light lunch and a free afternoon.
Day 3 onwards
Only now do we recommend the Sacred Valley (Pisac / Ollantaytambo, 3,500 m at most), and only after that should you think about Vinicunca, Humantay or the Inca Trail.
If someone tells you that you can do Vinicunca the day after landing in Cusco, they are selling you a package, not a journey.
