Vinicunca: what no agency tells you before you climb the Rainbow Mountain
It went viral on Instagram in 2016 and the photo has been everywhere ever since. But the reality of the hike, the weather, the altitude and the day you visit matters more than any filter.
Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain, stands at 5,200 meters above sea level. For most travelers, it is the highest point they will ever reach.
What Instagram does not show
The final hike from Phulawasipata is 4 km of steady climbing with little oxygen. Most people take between 90 minutes and 2 hours. It is not technical, but the altitude makes it hard.
The weather rules
From April to November the weather is dry and the mountain looks sharp. From December to March the rainy season sets in: clouds, mud and the risk of seeing nothing at all. If you come in the rainy season, plan it for your first available day, so you have room to try again.
What time to leave
Pick-up is between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. It is very cold at that hour (it can be -5 °C at the top). The reason: to get there before the afternoon clouds build up.
The emotional side
Standing at 5,200 m is not the same as looking at a photo. It is short breaths, a pounding heart and an unobstructed landscape. For many travelers it is the most powerful memory of the whole trip. To make it that way, being accompanied by a local guide who understands each person's pace makes all the difference.
